Wakefield demonstrated their Super League class to coast through to the last 16 of the Carnegie Challenge Cup with a seven-try victory over Salford in their fourth-round tie at The Willows.

The Wildcats shrugged off the absence of 10 senior players to book their place in Tuesday's fifth-round draw alongside 10 other Super League clubs after the weekend's ties went strictly to form.

With half-backs Danny Brough and Jamie Rooney pulling the strings, John Kear's men seized control against Shaun McRae's National League One leaders thanks to a three-try burst in a seven-minute spell in the second quarter of the match.

Salford created the first try-scoring opportunity when full-back Karl Fitzpatrick broke from his own half and got winger Andy Ballard racing down the left wing but man of the match Brough pulled off a flying tackle to halt the danger.

From then on, it was nearly all Wakefield as their big pack got on top, creating the space for their half-backs and lively hooker Sam Obst to work their magic.

Ballard put the Reds in front with a seventh-minute penalty but Brough equalised after Salford loose forward Jordan Turner had been penalised for a high tackle.

Fitzpatrick came to Salford's rescue when Wakefield full-back Matt Blaymire was put through gap by teenage loose forward Jay Pitts, turning his opposite number on his back over the line.

But he was powerless to prevent stand-off Jamie Rooney scoring the game's first try on 20 minutes. Winger Scott Grix made the initial break and hooker Tevita Leo-Latu provided the link before Rooney finished off powerfully.

The score opened the floodgates, with centre Ryan Atkins powering over from Brough's short pass and Grix crossing unopposed at the corner after a smart cut-out pass from the impressive scrum-half.

Wakefield were reduced to 12 men with the sin-binning of prop Ricky Bibey for a late tackle on youngster Richard Myler five minutes before half-time but they were in cruise control by then.

Salford thought they had made the extra man count when Robbie Paul combined with Matt Gardner to get Ballard over at the corner but the try was disallowed by video referee Richard Silverwood for an obstruction earlier in the move.

The visitors made the most of the let-off, taking play upfield and creating the position for Rooney to send Sam Obst over for a fourth try, which Brough goaled.

Reds captain Malcolm Alker grabbed a try in the final move of the first half to briefly give his side a glimmer of hope.

Wakefield, who brought 18-year-old centre Josh Griffin on for his debut in the second half, had a try by Leo-Latu disallowed for obstruction within three minutes of the re-start but it was only a matter of time before their extra class began to tell.

Brough finished off a break from Obst to touch down, centre Tony Martin sent winger Sean Gleeson over and Leo Latu finally got his reward when he forced his way over from dummy half, with Brough taking his goal tally to five from eight attempts.
