Danny Brough produced an inspirational display as Wakefield inflicted more Belle Vue misery on his former club Castleford with a 28-16 win.

The Tigers were condemned to relegation on their last visit to the ground in 2006 and the player chiefly responsible for their return to the engage Super League spared them no sentiment on their return.

Brough, who left the Tigers after last season's promotion, scored a try, set up another and kicked two goals as the Wildcats defied strong winds and snow for a third win of the season.

Bottom side Castleford, looking for only their second victory, had fought back to within two points from 12-0 down but, despite a spirited Tigers display, Wakefield were always able to keep their noses in front.

Wakefield drew first blood with just four minutes on the clock, Jason Demetriou's kick bouncing kindly for Jamie Rooney to gather and race over.

Scrum-half Brough converted and went close to inflicting further damage as he chased his own dangerous kick but Craig Huby just did enough to thwart him.

A menacing Rooney kick then ran dead and when Wakefield claimed their second try after 16 minutes, the Tigers looked to have a long night in store.

Aaron Murphy touched down after scooping up a loose ball and breaking clear but the credit went to Adam Watene for a ferocious tackle that saw Brent Sherwin lose possession.

Yet Cas improved as the weather worsened and responded with two tries in the space of four minutes.

Luke Dorn brilliantly snatched a bouncing ball from under Matt Blaymire's nose after Sherwin's smart kick and then side-stepped Murphy in-goal to touch down under the posts.

Wakefield then conceded a penalty close to their own goalline to gift the Tigers a full set in dangerous territory and they took full advantage as Peter Lupton pounced on another Sherwin kick.

With Huby missing one of the conversions, Wakefield retained a two-point advantage which they extended with a third try before the break.

Sam Obst scampered through from dummy half and Wakefield would have had another before the hooter had in-form Ryan Atkins gathered Brough's pass.

Castleford made a strong start to the second half in a determined effort to get back into the game.

The visiting fans thought winger Richard Owen had scored within moments of the restart but the attention of several Wakefield players just prevented him touching down in the corner.

Wakefield withstood the attack and took a firm grip on the game when Brough, the newly-appointed Scotland captain, saw a gap and slalomed through the Cas defence for a fine individual try.

Rooney took over kicking duties to put the hosts in sight of victory but Cas were not finished as Dorn broke clear down the left for his second try and Joe Westerman added the extras.

Brough soon put paid to any prospect of a late Cas fightback, however, by setting in motion the move that saw Rooney put Atkins over for the killer try.

It was Atkins' fifth try of the season and a superb way to celebrate the award of a new contract this week.

Rooney wrapped up the win with a late penalty, leaving Castleford firmly rooted to the foot of the table.
