Huddersfield's rollercoaster season continues to flit from the ridiculous to the sublime after they produced a stunning second-half fightback to arrest their recent slump at rain-soaked Belle Vue.

The Giants were 13-0 behind at the break after an abject first-half display but their response after the restart was emphatic as they ran in four tries in 13 minutes to leave Wakefield stunned.

Yet Trinity refused to surrender and two tries from hooker Sam Obst in the final quarter ensure a tense finale, though the Giants held on for a morale-boosting success.

The sequence of scoring in an absorbing encounter summed up Huddersfield's topsy-turvy season but ultimately encouraged hopes that, far from being sucked into a relegation dogfight, a place in the engage Super League play-off places is firmly within their grasp.

The Giants' biggest problem is consistency - they began their campaign with seven defeats on the bounce but then hit form to claim seven straight wins.

However, their recent results had been miserable, with just one point taken from their previous five games prior to their arrival at Belle Vue.

Given such dire form, Wakefield appeared the perfect opponents.

Indeed this was Huddersfield's eighth straight win against Trinity and ensured they continued to hold the Indian sign over their near neighbours.

And yet a Giants victory had looked distinctly remote at half-time after a pitiful opening period in which the visitors looked utterly bereft of confidence.

In truth, Huddersfield proved architects of their own downfall in the early stages after conceding two carbon copy tries from Peter Fox, both of which resulted from slipshod defending.

In the fifth minute Wakefield scrum-half Ben Jeffries sent a teasing kick into the right corner but Giants wing Paul Reilly allowed Fox to steal in ahead of him and ground the ball.

Jamie Rooney failed to convert but Wakefield soon extended their advantage 13 minutes later when Reilly failed to deal with another Jeffries kick and Fox capitalised to claim his second.

With Rooney adding a goal, a penalty and a drop-goal, John Kear's men were 13-0 ahead after 23 minutes and went in at the break with that advantage.

Giants coach Jon Sharp would have doubtless given his players a severe verbal volley at the break but their response could not have been more emphatic.

In the 45th minute skipper Chris Thorman barged under the posts and three minutes later a break involving Rod Jensen, Jamahl Lolesi and Robbie Paul culminated in Stephen Wild touching down in the right corner.

Suddenly, Huddersfield were dominant and Jensen's neat inside pass sent Steve Snitch scuttling clear for his side's third try in the 52nd minute.

Remarkably, Huddersfield's fourth score inside 13 second-half minutes arrived shortly before the hour mark when Snitch sent Shane Elford over the line.

Obst scampered over in the right corner five minutes later before Thorman responded with his fourth penalty.

Obst's second score had Giants living on their nerves in the dying stages and Rooney's conversion cut the gap to a single point but Huddersfield held on.
