Warrington Wolves cruised through to the quarter finals of the Carnegie Challenge Cup with a nine-try victory against National League Two side Barrow Border Raiders at the Halliwell Jones stadium.

New Zealand stand off Vinnie Anderson led the way for the Wolves with a hat-trick of tries, while Great Britain centre Martin Gleeson and winger Richie Barnett both crossed twice for the home side.

Anderson suffered the disappointment of missing out on a challenge cup final appearance when failing to make the St Helens squad in last year's victory over Huddersfield at Twickenham which triggered his move from Knowsley Road to the Wolves.

And the Kiwi will now be hoping to make up for that low by helping his new side to make their first cup final appearance in 17 years at the new Wembley in August.

The Cumbrians put up a spirited performance against their more illustrious rivals and were rewarded with three tries from Brett McDermott, Nick Beach and a spectacular effort by Khamal Ganley.

As expected the Wolves were soon in front as Anderson took a Lee Briers pass to score and the Kiwi repeated the act six minutes later to claim his second try and with Briers on target with both conversions the Wolves led 12-0 after 16 minutes.

But the Cumbrians were playing with tremendous spirit and were rewarded for their efforts when Paul Wilcock's kick through

was fumbled by Ben Westwood and substitute McDermott was on hand to scoop up the loose ball and touch down and Beach converted.

But two further tries from the home side in final eight minutes of the half from Martin and Mark Gleeson and a further Briers goal saw the Wolves lead 22-6 at half time.

The Wolves increased their lead a minute after the restart through Brent Grose and Anderson completed his hat-trick two minutes later when he collected a superb Briers kick to touch down.

One of the biggest cheers of the afternoon though was for a superb try from the visitors when Liam Finch's kick was spectacularly grasped from the air by Ganley to score.

But the Wolves finished with a second try from Martin Gleeson and two from Barnett but Barrow had the final say when Beach crossed in the final minute.
