BRADFORD REPORTS 2006

Bradford 34 Wigan 12

By Ian Laybourn, PA Sport Rugby League Correspondent

Crisis club Wigan sank to the foot of the table for the first time for more than a century as Bradford overcame farcical conditions to cut loose at a fog-bound Odsal.

This was a stark reminder of winter rugby, when Wigan ruled the rugby league world, but the modern-day Warriors are a pale shadow of the famous side that swept all before them in the 1980s and early 1990s.

The biggest threat to a dominant Bulls was the fog which descended on the Odsal bowl and for most of the match left the 11,644 crowd in the dark.

Wigan might have fancied an abandonment, knowing that defeat by more than 10 points would send them below engage Super League bottom club Wakefield on points difference.

It was a hopeless cause. Ian Millward's men looked beaten before kick-off and a sixth defeat in seven matches was never in doubt from the moment their frail defence opened up invitingly for Bradford prop Andy Lynch to score the game's first try on five minutes.

With four first-choice forwards sidelined through injury, Millward gave debuts to new signings Tim Jonkers and Oliver Wilkes and, although Wigan were willing, they could not disguise the gulf in class.

Bradford, who started with Stanley Gene at scrum-half in place of the injured Paul Deacon, were 12-0 ahead after only eight minutes, with centre Ben Harris adding a second try after Marcus Bai had caught Iestyn Harris' bomb and offloaded superbly from the tackle.

Wigan had made life difficult for themselves by gifting their opponents possession with handling errors but, with hooker Mickey Higham causing problems with his tricky running, they briefly struck back.

Skipper Sean O'Loughlin ran a perfect line to take Danny Orr's inside pass and touch down, although the Wigan fans behind the opposite end could not have witnessed it.

Danny Tickle's conversion halved the deficit and Wigan would have scored again had Dennis Moran not been pulled up for a forward pass from Higham.

Bradford eventually weathered the storm and extended their lead on 27 minutes when Wigan winger Mark Calderwood failed to clear the danger caused by Gene's grubber kick and centre Shontayne Hape pounced.

And it was a run from dummy half by the ever-dangerous Gene that set up a fourth try just before the break for substitute Karl Pryce.

It took the Bulls just 80 seconds to extend their lead, a blockbusting run up the middle by Pryce setting up the position for Harris to place a kick for right winger Marcus Bai, who struck for his side's fifth try.

Harris' third goal put more daylight between the sides and, as both sets of players struggled to cope with the greasy ball, the game degenerated further into farce.

Second rower Chris McKenna went over following a cut-out pass from Harris to make it 30-6 before a breakaway try by centre Pat Richards, set up by speedster Brett Dallas and converted by Tickle, gave the Wigan followers something to cheer.

Bradford left winger Lesley Vainikolo was always a dangerous threat and he eventually powered his way over seven minutes from the end to register his 115th try in his 110th appearance.
