BRADFORD REPORTS 2006
Picture Gene goes over in Huddersfield

Bradford 30 Wests Tigers 10

By Andy Hampson, PA Sport

Bradford Bulls maintained the proud record of British champions with a rousing, record victory over Wests Tigers in the 2006 Carnegie World Club Challenge.

Great Britain forward Stuart Fielden was the Bulls' hero with a try in each half as the Super League champions destroyed the cream of Australian club rugby league to thrill a 19,207 crowd at Huddersfield's Galpharm Stadium.

It was the biggest of the nine successes by British clubs in 12 World Club Challenge matches since 1987, Bradford matching Wigan's record with their third triumph in five years.

Wests Tigers were a shadow of the team that lifted the NRL title, but the Bulls' performance will nonetheless send out a timely signal to their Super League rivals that they will not relinquish their crown without a fight.

Fielden - who defied modern trends by playing the full 80 minutes - was the outstanding performer in a match where the skill levels were surprisingly high, given its timing.

New signings Marcus Bai and Stanley Gene both marked their competitive debuts with tries, and captain Iestyn Harris kicked five goals from six attempts as well as stepping superbly into the scrum-half role.

Bai, who scored the first and last of Bradford's five tries, has now memorably completed a hat-trick of Challenge successes with three different clubs - having tasted victory with Melbourne in 2000 and Leeds 12 months ago.

Both sides were without six members of their Grand Final-winning teams - but on this form, the Bulls look good to repeat their domestic success.

Paul Deacon, who had recovered from the horrific facial injury sustained at the same venue playing for Great Britain, succumbed to a hamstring injury picked up in pre-season training in Lanzarote.

But Harris made light of the switch from stand-off, and the hugely impressive Karl Pryce caused all sorts of problems for the Aussies' defence with his elusive running.

Busy hooker Ian Henderson and the Bradford half-backs revelled in the space created by the explosive forward play of Fielden, Andy Lynch and Jamie Langley.

Bai opened the scoring after only six minutes when he took a cut-out pass from full-back Michael Withers and scooted over at the corner.

Harris hit the left-hand upright with the conversion - and the Tigers, having withstood intense pressure on their line, struck back to level the scores on 14 minutes when stand-off Daniel Fitzhenry dummied his way over for a try.

With Test scrum-half Scott Prince trying to reproduce his man-of-the-match form from October's Grand Final, the Australians threatened to take control.

But Bradford re-asserted their authority in the second quarter - and after Shontayne Hape had narrowly failed to touch down Pryce's kick, Fielden stamped his immense authority on the proceedings.

Harris would have been proud of the sidestep, but the fend was his own trademark as he carved open the visitors' defence to score a superb solo try.

Harris added the conversion and kicked a penalty a minute before the break to give his side an eight-point cushion.

Fielden crossed the line again eight minutes into the second half only to be held up - but he made no mistake four minutes later when he charged on to a short pass from Henderson.

The impressive Gene then forced his way over from close range, and Bai grabbed his second on 72 minutes - scooping up Harris' long, low pass to finish in spectacular fashion.

The Tigers were well beaten but at least they had the final say when full-back Brett Hodgson gathered Prince's kick to the line for his side's second try - and he also added the goal.
