Bradford slumped to their second successive defeat of the season after an
inspired show from Widnes.
The Bulls, stunned by Wakefield on the opening day, were second best to the
Vikings who had the man of the match in Owen Craigie.
The Australian new boy crossed for two tries and also landed a drop-goal in a
stunning display.
Widnes, crushed 40-18 at St Helens in their opening fixture, made a dream
start when Stuart Reardon lost the ball after a thundering tackle by Shane
Millard following Mick Cassidy's kick.
Craigie, one of nine players making home debuts for the Vikings, went
over from the scrum but Bradford hit back after 17 minutes when Leon Pryce
streaked 70 metres to touch down with Paul Deacon landing the goal.
But the Vikings showed plenty of spirit and stunned the Bulls with two tries
in three minutes to lead 14-6.
First, Aaron Moule touched town and then Matt Whitaker took Gary Connolly's
inside pass to go over.
Steve Rowlands landed a penalty after Stuart Fielden tackled Simon Finnigan
without the ball to increase the lead to 16-6.
Bradford were without Leslie Vainikolo through injury and brought on Karl
Pratt for Robbie Paul on the half-hour.
Bradford started the second half the brighter and took advantage when Widnes
were reduced to 12 men when winger Andrew Emilio was sin-binned for holding down
Jamie Langley.
Andy Smith went over in the corner and then Iestyn Harris touched down from
close range with Deacon landing the goal to level 16-16.
But the Vikings regained the lead on the hour when Jon Whittle collected
Craigie's kick with Rowlands adding the goal.
Then the outstanding Craigie grabbed his second try but Bradford gave
themselves some hope with Karl Pryce touching down 12 minutes from time to cut
the gap to 26-22.
A Craigie drop-goal gave Widnes a five-point advantage before Shane Millard
secured a memorable win for the Vikings by grabbing a debut try two minutes from
time.
