Life in the engage Super League may be difficult for Widnes Vikings but it
was just a stroll in the sun today as they progressed into the quarter-finals of
the Powergen Challenge Cup.
The power and strength of the full-timers made things difficult for Barrow.
Yet it was the home side that almost had the first score as Freddie Zitter was
held close to the line.
Widnes scored the first of their nine tries as a difficult bouncing ball
evaded the home full-back and David Mills dived on it.
The writing was on the wall as Widnes piled in three tries in a six-minute
spell.
Stephen Myler crashed over after good work by man-of-the-match Owen Craigie;
Tim Holmes touched down following a break down the middle, and Matt Whitaker
strode over from the halfway line.
Barrow got some hope when Andrew Emelio failed to smother a Darren Holt kick,
and James Nixon got the touchdown.
But Widnes had the last word of the half as Misili Manu dived in at the
corner.
A very loose Holt pass gave Adam Hughes the chance to race in from 60 metres
to add to the Widnes score, and then Whitaker crossed for his second try. But
Barrow were not completely broken, Mike Whitehead crashing in for a try, and for
the next 20 minutes they kept Widnes at bay.
However, with Sala Fa'alogo and Gary Hulse getting tries, and Myler taking his
goal tally to seven, Widnes reached the 50-point mark.
