Lightning-quick substitute Paul White lit up a drab engage Super League
basement battle at the Galpharm Stadium.
There was little to choose between two poor teams until super-sub White
entered the action midway through the first half and hit the Vikings with two
tries in seven minutes.
The Giants scored again either side of half-time to race into an unassailable
28-4 lead and, although Widnes hit back with three second-half tries, they
finished a well beaten side.
The Vikings lost a cutting edge when stand-off Owen Craigie went off injured
before half-time but it was their shabby defence that will have most concerned
coach Frank Endacott.
They drew first blood on four minutes when loose forward Simon Finnigan took
Mark Smith's flat pass from dummy half to slice through a gap in the home
defence to touch down.
Steve Rowlands' conversion kick rebounded back off a post, a sure sign that
little was to go right for the visitors.
Huddersfield, who had lost their previous three matches, drew level on 11
minutes when impressive hooker Brad Drew kicked to the corner for prop Eorl
Crabtree to touch down.
The game was going nowhere until introduction of the pacy White transformed
the Giants.
He got on the end of the best move of the match involving full-back Paul
Reilly and stand-off Chris Thorman to score with his first touch of the ball on
26 minutes.
He also finished off a break by powerful second rower Stuart Jones six minutes
later for his second, fending off some weak tackling in the process, and Reilly
maintained his side's momentum with a solo try two minutes before the break.
Thorman, who tormented the Widnes defence with his pinpoint tactical kicking,
kicked three of the four conversions to put his side in firm control by the
break.
A refreshed Drew, who returned at half-time at the expense of the two-try
White, broke clear from his own half and the supporting David March got winger
Marcus St Hilaire over for Huddersfield's fifth try.
The Giants looked to have scored again when towering forward Paul Smith
stretched out of a two-man tackle but the try was disallowed by the video
referee after three minutes of replays.
The let-off seemed to give the visitors encouragement as they struck with two
tries in five minutes to give themselves a glimmer hope of getting back in the
game.
Finnigan took Hulse's pass to score a carbon copy of his first try on 50
minutes and then centre Aaron Moule beat St Hilaire one-on-one to touch down at
the corner.
Moule then added his second on 68 minutes, snaffling possession to break up a
dangerous Huddersfield attacking move and showing his pace on a 90-metre sprint
to the line.
Rowlands was able to convert just one of his side's four tries and
Huddersfield had the final say when St Hilaire followed up March's kick to the
corner for his second try, to which Thorman added his fifth goal.
