New Zealand star Sonny Bill Williams has set his sights on making his
comeback from injury in the World Club Challenge against Leeds.
The 19-year-old Canterbury Bulldogs loose forward has been ruled out of
Saturday's Gillette Tri-Nations clash with Great Britain in Hull with a shoulder
injury.
That means his next match will be back in England on February 4 in the
Carnegie World Club Challenge at Elland Road.
Williams, whose injury has been diagnosed as a torn muscle, is confident of
being fit to face the Rhinos and insists the Australian champions will be taking
the match seriously.
"I'll need a bit of rehab but I should be okay," he told a news conference
at Elland Road to announce the Rugby Football League's five-figure sponsorship
deal with Leeds Metropolitan University's Carnegie sports faculty.
"The boys started training this week. There are 20 spots up for grabs and
everybody is putting their hands up. It's not just another game," Williams
added.
"A lot of clubs have come over in the past and not taken it too seriously but
I know we'll be fully concentrating on it.
"We'll be fielding our best side possible. It would be a great start to the
2005 season if we could get a win."
The match will also have special significance for Leeds captain Kevin
Sinfield, who says he is raring to go after being omitted from the Great Britain
squad for the Tri-Nations Series.
"It's been a focus for me," said Sinfield.
"I've done a lot of thinking and I'm really looking forward to this match.
I'm more hungry and motivated than I've ever been."
The League are hopeful of filling Elland Road for the second time in three
months after it was confirmed that the Tri-Nations final on Saturday week is a
39,000 sell-out.
"Interest has lifted tremendously since the end of the season and our
season-ticket sales are double what they were this time last year," said Leeds
marketing chief Rob Oates.
