Catalans Dragons will have a new captain as they look for a change of fortunes in 2011.
New coach Trent Robinson, who has succeeded fellow Australian Kevin Walters as boss of last year's Engage Super League wooden spoonists, has yet to decide who will lead them in the new season but will replace 2010 skipper Thomas Bosc.
The France international half-back is set to miss the first six weeks of the new season after undergoing surgery to correct a long-standing knee injury but had already agreed to step down as captain.
"Thomas doesn't feel it's his position and I don't feel it's his position," said Robinson.
"He's definitely a leader but he's more of a free spirit and I want him to concentrate on his football without the extra pressure.
"We've got a leadership group and, by round one, we will have decided on one captain or a couple of captains."
Robinson is likely to turn to youngster Tony Gigot in Bosc's absence for the opening rounds but has other options up his sleeve.
"Ben Farrar and Setaimata Sa have both played five-eighth in the NRL and we try to give young Tony more experience and a chance to develop," he said.
"Thomas is obviously a great player so he's a bit of a loss but it's something we've known about for a while."
Centre Vince Duport, who has rejoined the club from Toulouse, will also miss the start of the season after undergoing a knee reconstruction.
Robinson, recruited from Sydney Roosters after cutting his coaching teeth in the French domestic competition, has rebuilt the Catalans squad with no fewer than 10 new signings and has not finished yet.
The Dragons, who held their pre-season media day today, were close to signing Joel Monaghan before he opted to join his brother Michael at Warrington and Robinson is still on the look-out for an outside back.
"We've still got a quota spot available and there is a need for an outside back," he said. "We're still looking but we're not going to rush."
With a new scrum-half in Scott Dureau and hooker in Ian Henderson, Robinson accepts it could take some time for his new-look side to gel and he is loathe to publicly set targets for 2011.
"I still don't want to come 13th," said Robinson, whose side lost 34-22 at home to Crusaders in a friendly in Perpignan on Saturday.
"We're a work in progress. We are a pretty new team as far as coaches and players go and the combos will take some time.
"We want to start well but we've got to be pretty realistic and we expect to grow as a force as the games go on."
