Record-breaking fly-half Carter suffered the injury in the Super Rugby final, leaving the field during the Canterbury Crusaders' 33-32 defeat by the NSW Waratahs.

His club has now confirmed the injury is a small crack in his fibula which will need a month to heal.

"A scan has revealed a small crack in his upper fibula. The size of the crack meant it was not originally picked up by an X-ray and required a scan to locate it," the Crusaders said in a statement.

"The injury just requires rest to heal and it is hoped that his recovery will take approximately four weeks."

That timescale will rule Carter out of New Zealand's opening two Championship fixtures against Australia, where the Bledisloe Cup will be on the line, as well as a Test against Argentina in Napier on September 6.

If the recuperation takes any longer, Carter would be a doubt to face South Africa in Wellington a week later.

Carter has only just returned from an extended sabbatical which saw him sit out nearly all of the Super Rugby regular season.
