Evans to miss Australia clash

Wales lock Ian Evans has been ruled out of Saturday's Test match against Australia at the Millennium Stadium.

  • Ian Evans: Failed a fitness test
  • Lou Reed (r): Drafted into the Wales side

Evans failed a fitness test on a knee problem, the Welsh Rugby Union announced.

He will be replaced in the starting line-up by Cardiff Blues forward Lou Reed.

Reed, 25, won his solitary previous international cap during last season's RBS 6 Nations Championship game against Scotland, when he featured as a replacement.

He goes straight into the starting XV and will partner Luke Charteris in the second-row. The Wales bench is unchanged from that announced on Thursday.

In a statement, the WRU said: "Evans has been excluded in order to give him optimum opportunity to manage his injury.

"While he completed training this week, he has not been totally free of pain.

"And, with this in mind and after extended discussions between the WRU and his regional medical team, it has been decided to withdraw him from the game in order to seek further investigation and opinion.

"A timescale for his absence has not been discussed at this present time."

Ospreys forward Evans becomes the latest Wales casualty of an injury-ravaged autumn campaign that has so far produced successive defeats against Argentina, Samoa and world champions New Zealand.

Going into the Wallabies finale this weekend, Wales head coach Warren Gatland was without the services of George North, Adam Jones, Alun-Wyn Jones, Richard Hibbard, Aaron Jarvis, Bradley Davies and Josh Turnbull, with Evans now joining that list.

Bath prop Paul James and Perpignan utility back James Hook, meanwhile, were unavailable for Saturday due to club commitments as the Australia fixture falls outside the International Rugby Board's autumn Test window and clubs were under no obligation to release their players.
