The 26-year-old centre or second rower was unveiled at a press conference in Auckland as the successor to Benji Marshall, who was stripped of the captaincy by coach Stephen Kearney.

Mannering, who has captained New Zealand Warriors for the last three years, will lead the Kiwis in a one-off Test against Australia in April and the World Cup, which will be held in the United Kingdom and France in the autumn.

Mannering has played 28 times for New Zealand and was a member of their 2008 World Cup-winning team.
