Ian Millward previews this weekend's Super League and NRL action with Widnes rated the best bet on Sunday.

Widnes: The best bet of the weekend
Widnes: The best bet of the weekend

1pt double Widnes and Huddersfield on the handicaps

Bradford v Widnes (scr) - Sunday 1500

I rate the Vikings as one of my best bets of the round. They were very clinical in beating Wigan last week and are a side who are very well constructed. Bradford were on a winning run before falling to Castleford last week and I just wonder how they’ll cope with the loss of momentum.

Huddersfield v Hull (+12) - Sunday 1500

Huddersfield are unbeaten in their last five and are slowly gathering momentum for the play-offs. They may only have drawn at Warrington last week but were the better side for the majority of the game. Hull are a very inconsistent, good side on their day, but away from home here I don’t think they’ll ruffle the Giants’ feathers.

Hull KR v Catalans (scr) - Sunday 1500

Catalan are the better team here but their form on the road continues to be a cause for concern. Hull KR were pretty average in the derby at Hull last week and will be desperate to win their last home game of the season. I think they will just about do it – but it’s not a confident call.

Salford v London (+32) - Sunday 1500

Salford come here off the back of their most embarrassing defeat of the season at Wakefield. Players like Rangi Chase should be running rings around London – but can you trust them to deliver? The home side will win this one but I’ll take the Broncos to cover with a huge start, a habit they have got into of late.

Castleford v Wakefield (+8) - Sunday 1530

If St Helens fail to win on Thursday then Castleford will have one eye on topping the regular season table. They have been the success story of the campaign and have already heavily beaten their near neighbours twice.

However the Wildcats will be on a real high following their thrashing of Salford, are a fresh side and have their half-backs in outstanding form. I’ll chance them with the start.

NRL

Storm v Broncos (+10) - Friday 1050

There is so much at stake in this one. If the Broncos lose they are out of the play-offs and losing Sam Thaiday is a savage blow. I thought the Storm were outstanding last week when only run down by the best team in the competition, the Roosters, in the final ten minutes. I’m with them to win and cover.

Cowboys v Sea Eagles (+4) - Saturday 1030

This is a blockbuster of a game. Manly are in good form now but are without hooker Matt Ballin and he will be sorely missed around the ruck area.

North Queensland are on a real roll right now and I think they can continue their surge by winning here and covering as the regular season draws to a close.
