The 55-year-old one-time Palestinian refugee, who saved Salford from financial ruin in 2013, has hinted he now wants to do the same with the Knights, who are currently owned by the Australian game's governing body following the exit of Nathan Tinkler in May.
Former Wigan and Newcastle stand-off Matthew Johns revealed on his radio show in Australia on Wednesday that the wealthy racehorse owner wants to extend his portfolio to the NRL.
Johns claimed Koukash is "absolutely desperate" to buy Newcastle and is about to begin the process to be able to take ownership.
Koukash was not available for comment but confirmed his interest on his Twitter account.
"I would confirm that there has been some contact with an NRL team but it is very early days," Koukash tweeted. "My absolute focus remains on the Red Devils."
The NRL has an 80 per cent stake in the Knights, with the Newcastle members club owning the rest.
