The Keighley-born Reed was initially ruled out for six weeks after dislocating his collarbone but defied doctor's orders by coming back early as Brisbane attempted to keep their season alive.
The Broncos say the injury never healed and continued to dislocate in almost every game that he played.
He was banned from doing any contact work at training and club officials were astounded at the bravery and sacrifice of a player willing to put his body on the line regardless of the obvious pain he was suffering.
"He is a tough b*****," said Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin. "He just kept playing."
Reed will learn this week whether he needs surgery and if his World Cup dreams are over.
