New Salford coach Brian Noble has moved quickly to ensure that Martin Gleeson will not be following his former St Helens and Great Britain team-mate and close friend Sean Long out of the club.

The presence of Long on the City Reds' backroom staff was thought to have been a key factor behind Gleeson's decision to make his comeback with Salford when his 18-month doping ban ended in December.

Both players were at the centre of controversy during Noble's final year as Great Britain coach, with Long walking out of the 2006 Tri-Nations Series on the eve of a crucial game against Australia.

Long quit as assistant coach three days after Noble's appointment as the successor to Phil Veivers and was this week appointed to Wigan's backroom staff.

The 32-year-old Gleeson signed a two-year deal with Salford at the start of the season and has now agreed a 12-month extension, which means he is almost certain to finish his career with the Manchester club.

"Martin is the ultimate professional and we are delighted he has decided to extend his stay with us," said Salford chief executive Ed Farish.

"He is a top player with a wealth of experience and this is a big boost for us."

Australian prop Shannan McPherson, 27, who joined the Reds from South Sydney two years ago, has also agreed a new contract extension taking him to the end of 2015.
