VAR LOOKS SPRINTING STAR

By Simon Holt

AZAMOUR - JOHN OXX:

He was a horse I loved last year and he was a narrow winner of the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot after two good Guineas runs. He later won the Irish Champion Stakes from Norse Dancer and stays in training. He is from a family that improves with age and will feature prominently in all the major races at a mile or ten furlongs.

CAPE COLUMBINE - DAVID ELSWORTH:

She finished second in the Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket this week having shown tremendous promise at two. She will come on for the reappearance and is a big, strong filly with a lot of scope. She could be best at six or seven furlongs.

DESCARTES - SAEED BIN SURROR:

He is a lovely colt, a son of Dubai Millenium and stoutely bred on the dam's side. He is a tall, scopey indivdual who won a maiden at Newbury last backend on heavy ground. For me he will be a big improver at three.

FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND - AIDAN O'BRIEN:

He is unbeaten in two starts to date and figures prominently in the betting lists for the 2000 Guineas. From what I have heard he is working very well, is held in high regard, and is one to keep on the right side of.

GREY SWALLOW - DERMOT WELD:

A horse who clashed swords with Azamour at three and another who should progress this term. He didn't give his running in the Arc but with Dermot Weld guiding him, there are more races to be won at the top level.

LOST SOLDIER THREE - LUCA CUMANI:

Moving up in distance, he is a nice staying prospect having won decent handicaps at York and Doncaster last season. He is progressive and won't be discredited in the Cup races if connections go down that route.

OUIJA BOARD - ED DUNLOP:

I could hardly leave her out as she is potentially the star of the season. She was a runaway Oaks winner before a good third in the Arc and signing off with victory at the Breeders' Cup. We hear encouraging reports, and while she may not have an arduous campaign, she is a real good filly.

QUIFF - SIR MICHAEL STOUTE:

Another filly to follow having finished second to Rule Of Law in the St Leger on her final start at three. She earlier ran away with the Yorkshire Oaks and I think she has a lot of improvement in her. She is at her best with cut in the ground but will also handle a faster surface.

STREAM OF GOLD - SIR MICHAEL STOUTE:

He showed he was a lot better than a handicapper when running out one of the most impressive winners of the Lincoln I can remember. He will be raised in class in the near future and is reported to have improved since Doncaster.

VAR - CLIVE BRITTAIN:He came over from America last season and didn't seem to need much time to settle in, winning at Goodwood before seeing off the best sprinters in Europe in the Prix de l'Abbaye. He could be very exciting in a sprint division which seems to be lacking strength in depth.
