Analysis

MY TENT OR YOURS succeeded where Binocular failed but the latter was a notoriously stuffy individual who invariably needed his first run of the season whereas his 'successor' was a trifle buzzy in his younger days. He's learnt to settle and did so well here off a steady early gallop set by the blinkered Cotton Mill before going through the gears and quickening clear of the opposition in fine style. He was reported to be straight enough for this reappearance although the stable's runners have tended to need an outing this season and it's reasonable to expect some improvement with Nicky Henderson referring to the Christmas Hurdle as his 'primary' objective in the first half of the season. He could be difficult to beat there providing that the ground isn't too testing as the track at Kempton should play to his strengths. He will obviously need to improve in order to win a Champion Hurdle while many will no doubt be suspicious of his ability to finish up the Cheltenham hill with the same alacrity that he does on sharper, flatter tracks but the same was also said of Binocular once upon a time. Cockney Sparrow enjoyed a productive first season over hurdles, showed improved form on the Flat over the summer and has carried that progression on into the winter. A smooth winner at Wetherby on her reappearance, this has to rate as a career best performance and she should be able to hold her own in races against her own sex while proving here that she can cut it against the boys. She has won over 13 furlongs on the level so could well see out the 20 furlongs of the mares' hurdle at Cheltenham although that is a stiffer track than she has done much of her racing on and, of course, Willie Mullins has something of a stranglehold on that contest. Grumeti had been seen out only once last season but connections had had a clear run with him this time around and this effort suggests that he retains all of his ability. He can be expected to derive some improvement from the outing and may be able to progress sufficiently to give himself outside claims in this division with handicaps still an option. Cotton Mill produced a better run than in the Elite Hurdle with the headgear and more positive tactics helping to bring about a change in fortune. The promise of his novice season looks likely to remain largely unfulfilled but he shouldn't go up in the handicap for this and remains feasibly treated on just a 2lb higher mark than when second to My Tent Or Yours in last season's Betfair Hurdle. Another crack at that prize, or indeed similar contests, would appear to be a logical objective while he could also go back up in trip. The disappointment of the race was Melodic Rendezvous whose Elite win had already been let down by a poor run from Far West. There weren't any obvious excuses and he will presumably be sent chasing now and there's no doubt that he has the size and scope to make up into a smart performer in that sphere. Duke Of Navan ran respectably race in the face of a stiff task and was expected to need the run; he will be of interest wherever he turns up next.
