Analysis

A race that has gone to the likes of Inglis Drever and Black Jack Ketchum in the past but this renewal followed the trend of the last couple of years and featured no realistic contenders for the Stayers Crown. FAIR ALONG had 4lbs more to carry this term having picked up this race by 18 lengths 12 months ago and he also had something to prove having disappointed in each of his three subsequent starts but his trainer reported him to be in good order and he has always gone well when fresh. He adopted his usual position towards the head of the field with Raslan for company but the pair set a sensible gallop from Kayf Aramis who headed the chasing pack. It was an uneventful first circuit run at a sensible gallop but Blazing Bailey was already looking reluctant to hold his position before they went out into the country for the second time and Tidal Bay also lost his position and dropped towards the rear. The field moved into the home straight with the first three unchanged but joined by Duc De Regniere who travelled stylishly for Barry Geraghty and Tidal Bay who had begun to make up some ground. Raslan quickly weakened out of contention in the straight and Nicky Henderson's market leader found disappointingly little as Fair Along and Kayf Aramis pulled clear of Duc De Regniere and Tidal Bay who looked an awkward ride as he stayed on in to third. It was a good duel between the front pair but Phillip Hobbs' game charge never ceded the advantage and always looked to be doing enough to follow up last year's victory. The front two have little chance of bettering Big Bucks but can pick up some decent place money through the season but Tidal Bay looks increasingly one to be wary of despite that brief resurgence last season. Duc De Regniere may have needed the run but his last three wins have been at around two miles five and it could be that he's best at around that trip.
