Not the most fearsome of Triumph Hurdle trials for the watching Sam Winner, Marsh Warbler, Grandouet at al, but a likeable enough performance from LOCAL HERO. Steve Gollings' gelding had beaten nothing of note in two hurdling runs at Wetherby and Doncaster but he had impressed on both occasions. He didn't jump spectacularly well here, making a bad mistake at the fifth flight and at the last, but he responded very gamely under pressure up the run-in. He had actually jumped to the front at the last but found himself in a scrap with runner-up Third Intention, and he will have learnt plenty from the final fifty yards, the last twenty of which he quickened two lengths clear. His trainer described him as a bit of a know-it-all, and whilst ruling out another run before the Festival (for which he will probably run in the Triumph although the Fred Winter is a feasible alternative), he will need to learn to jump better on the schooling ground in the meantime. Considering he pulled so hard in the early stages, Third Intention ran very well. He may well be effective over a tad further, but this looks an improved effort on his Newbury debut win (form worked out well; first juvenile hurdle winner for trainer Colin Tizzard). Indian Daudaie was not particularly well-fancied for his UK debut for Paul Nicholls but he ran well. Having been a bit sketchy at the third, and two from home, he ran on well up the hill and one feels that he'll be a warm order wherever he goes next. Akula ran fairly well from the front but was unable to live with the classier horses late on, whilst Maoi Chinn Tire travelled well. He was hot on the heels of the leaders coming down the hill but couldn't quicken and found his stamina ebbing away up the hill; better ground would have suited and he still looks a cracking claim for connections.
