Analysis

This renewal looked well up to scratch and saw a vastly improved performance from CAPTAIN CUTTER whose hurdling had left a lot to be desired in his first two starts over hurdles with only his undoubted class getting him home. His handler subsequently revealed that he had schooled well and he transferred that to the track although there is still room for significant improvement. A smart bumper performer who beat Kings Palace on debut before failing to give weight to Red Sherlock and The Skyfarmer, he clearly has all the right attributes to make it to the top and remains open to plenty of progress as he is still far from the finished article but the quotes of around 12/1 for the two longer novice races at Cheltenham don't make any obvious appeal at this stage of his career. Timesremembered has made a good start to his hurdling career after changing hands for 70,000 euros following one run in a Fairyhouse bumper, winning his first two before failing to concede 7lbs to Creepy in a Grade Two at Cheltenham. He, again, travelled very well through the race but couldn't live with the winner in the closing stages and looks just short of the top grade at present. It had been hoped that Oscar Rock would make it at this level but he has something to prove following this run and his defeat at Newcastle. Malcolm Jefferson felt that they didn't make enough use of him last time and he was duly ridden more prominently but he looked a tired horse in the straight although he did plug on past the weakening Shantou Magic. Charlie Longsdon's runner had won both starts over hurdles since finishing four lengths behind Captain Cutter in a bumper. Somewhat surprisingly, more use was made of him than had previously been the case while this was also the heaviest ground that he's encountered. He could be well worth giving another chance to depending upon where he lines up next. Kaki De La Pree has been raised by 13lbs for a two length success in a Carlisle handicap to a rating that suggested he should be in the thick of the action but that assessment looks wide of the mark on this evidence. His trainer had indicated before the race that he will be looked after with a view to going chasing next season.
