Analysis

A race that lost much of its lustre with the departure of the exciting favourite Bog Warrior who landed steeply and couldn't find his feet having brushed through the top of the fence at speed. His error was then compounded as stablemate Gift Of Dgab was brought down by the fallen horse. The finish was, nonetheless, fought out by two promising young chasers with Willie Mullins' BLACKSTAIRMOUNTAIN coming out on top. Paul Townend had been content to bide his time but moved into contention travelling strongly and won going away despite having taken his time to master the runner-up having jumped the last from which he was slowly away. A decent hurdler, he's now two out of two over fences and probably won a shade more comfortably than first glance suggests; he's certainly done enough to put himself in the picture for the Arkle although further improvement's required in order for him to be viewed as a leading candidate. Notus De La Tour is rated around a stone inferior to the winner over timber so was probably facing a stiff enough task here. He has taken well to fences but has, thus far, probably run to a similar level of form as he achieved over hurdles having been no match for Walkon prior to this. He's clearly a useful performer but looks like coming up short against the best and, in the process, won't have gone under the radar with handicaps in mind. He does, though, have more scope than Foildubh to whom - arguably - similar comments apply although the third comfortably reversed Punchestown form with Lucky William. Perfect Smile weakened fairly tamely on the run-in but may well have found this run coming too soon after his debut just over a week ago and is worth another chance.
