Analysis
An impressive performance in the opener but not from the runner expected as Dolatulo disappointed but SMAD PLACE impressed in equal measure. Smad Place had failed to win in two runs in France but his second place finished at Chateaubriant had worked out well with the horse that beat him going on to win a further two races. There was no marked market confidence behind him on his British bow but he settled well off the strong pace, moved strongly into contention at the head of the home straight and sealed an impressive victory with a spring-heeled leap at the last before powering clear with his stamina winning the day. He was given predictable quotes for the Triumph Hurdle but reportedly hadn't shown a great deal at home for a stable which is traditionally strong in this division and is regarded as more of a stayer than a speed horse with the Finale at Chepstow accordingly suggested as his next port of call. As impressive as he was, there is a possibility that this race rather fell into his lap as the two market leaders, Dolatulo and On Khee, chased a strong pace in company with Professeur Emery. Dolatulo had made every yard in winning his first two starts but was continually harried for the lead by Professeur Emery and did cede the advantage when making a bad mistake at the third. He made another bad mistake at the second last when already been asked for more by his jockey and had run his race at that point; to his credit, he kept on well enough for second but connections may need to teach him to settle if he's to fulfil his promise. On Khee is thought capable of winning races over hurdles by her shrewd handler and is sure to be placed to advantage in due course as this was a satisfactory introduction given that she was always hot on the heels of the leaders who appear to have gone off too hard. Professeur Emery has some scope but needs to learn to settle but this was an encouraging introduction from Missionaire, a Flat winner from a mark of 72, and he should prove capable of winning a handicap once qualified for a mark.
