Analysis

A slow pace ensured that the field was covered by under 10 lengths and raises doubts as to the value of the form but there's no doubt that SURE REEF is a very talented performer. Settled in second, he was badly outpaced on the sprint for home and was last turning in before picking up strongly in the straight to win convincingly in the manner of a horse who will appreciate a stiffer test, even allowing for the false pace here. That may be something of a surprise given he's by the Australian sprinter Choisir but the son of Danehill Dancer has sired a handful of jumps winners while Sure Reef, a mile and a half winner on the Flat, is a half-brother to a strong stayer and winning jumper Hollins. The Albert Bartlett would be the obvious race for him at Cheltenham although his trainer is concerned that he may race too keenly for that besides which the yard have a multitude of possibles for the race, including several that have shown better form thus far. Moonshine Lad, an £85,000 purchase in the spring after winning his point, was unbeaten in both completed starts under Rules and looks a fair prospect himself. He's all about stamina so wouldn't have been suited by the slow gallop and is open to any amount of improvement and it will be interesting to see where he heads next. They pulled nicely clear of Gilt Shadow who fared better here than when struggling to land a blow in the Royal Bond despite the dawdle not being in his favour. Wounded Warrior was dropping down in trip and found wanting for pace and is worth another chance to prove his mettle for graded races with his handler having spoken well of him but Mr Fiftyone has been found wanting in the face of a variety of different tests since making a promising start to the season. Gallant Tipp was another dropping back in trip so it's, perhaps, a shade surprising that his rider didn't make more use of him having found himself in front; he was readily left behind in the closing stages.
