A thrilling finish fought out between TALWAR and Trumpet Major with Jeremy Noseda's colt coming out on top in a sustained duel. He had disappointed connections on debut before running away with a Sandown maiden next time although his trainer hadn't felt that that was a strong race for the track. He got a good tow through the race from Comical before moving to the front where he was immediately joined by Trumpet Major but he always looked to be doing enough to hold his rival with the first two pulling clear of their rivals. He has a raft of entries from the valuable sales races to the Group One Phoenix Stakes and can certainly hold his own at a higher level than this. Trumpet Major had made his debut in a Newbury maiden in which his yard has introduced some smart types in recent years and had little trouble landing the odds at Goodwood next time. He failed to land a blow in the Coventry but this was much more like it and he saw out this first run over seven furlongs well, losing little in defeat. He holds entries in the Champagne Stakes and the Royal Lodge and would be a worthy runner in either contest although his yard does have an abundance of options. The money on the course was for stablemate Pearl Charm, reportedly not the flashiest worker at home, who was expected to improve considerably from Doncaster. However, he failed to pick up and never threatened - he may be worth another chance to prove that this was not his running. The exposed Jack Who's He finished in front of the winner at Royal Ascot but had been well-held in two subsequent runs at this level. He looks short of this class but ran his race and could pick up another contest when his sights are lowered as his attitude is commendable. Sound Advice had finished down the field in the Superlative Stakes and was left behind when the pace quickened; he plugged on but couldn't win the battle for third with Jack Who's He and appears to have been overfaced. Comical was just over two lengths behind the Superlative winner on his second start before impressing at Yarmouth but he dropped away tamely having made the running. This was a step up in class but he's surely better than this.
