Analysis

Neither of the main market protagonists are expected to head for Cheltenham with the two and a half mile novice chase at Aintree deemed more suitable for Fox Appeal and BALDER SUCCES' owners keener on Liverpool and Punchestown. The former was supported into favouritism with this step back up in distance expected to help after he had dropped back in trip at Doncaster. He didn't quite fire as he had done earlier in the season though and didn't stay on as well as might have been anticipated; perhaps he can recapture his zest in the spring. That's not to say that Balder Succes wasn't a worthy winner and connections were confident that the Kingmaker winner would see out this longer trip and he did so well. This victory opens up more options for the Kingmaker winner who is versatile with regard to underfoot conditions and he would have to be feared in the remaining top novice races for all that he still has a little to prove/find with the best in this division. The proximity of the 137 rated God's Own is the one negative for the form but Tom George's charge was having just his third start over fences and improved markedly for stepping up in trip and racing right-handed having looked ill at ease at Doncaster on both previous outings over the larger obstacles. Splitting a pair of 150+ rated rivals will have done little for his handicap mark for all that he was receiving weight and he will have to maintain his progression if he's to remain a step ahead of the assessor. Cheekpieces failed to re-ignite Dark Lover who has entries in a couple of the handicaps at Cheltenham but he has been described as best when fresh in the past so it is a little surprising that he's had three starts since the New Year; he remains a capable performer on his day and could be attractively weighted if dropped further in the handicap for this run. Loose Chips had won all three completed starts at this track over hurdles but was found out in this better race.
