Analysis

A dramatic finish to a race that has a habit of throwing up the odd distinctly useful winner with Champion Hurdle winner Make A Stand, Neptune winner Monsignor and Supreme second Medermit three of the more notable. IRVING is set to head for the two mile contest at the Cheltenham Festival following this third win in as many starts although his trainer indicated that he could take in the Grade One Tolworth next month first. Although far from being a foregone conclusion, it did appear as though he had got the upper hand of Prince Siegfried when the latter fell at the final flight and there was a good deal to like about the hurdling of this ex-German Flat performer who was pulling clear from his remaining rivals on the run to the line. He was cut to around 14/1 (from 20s) for the Sky Bet Supreme and that looks about right as present as we certainly haven't got to the limit of his ability yet he will need to step up on the bare form that he's shown to date. He was chased home by Volnay De Thaix who rallied strongly having been badly hampered by the faller and this was another encouraging performance from a horse that both trainer and jockey have described as a 'big baby'. It's hard to quibble with that assessment - he still looks rather novicey at his hurdles, spending quite a bit of time in the air - and looks very much a horse for next season. Splash of Ginge was a wide margin winner at Aintree on his preceding start but ran about as well as could have been expected in a run that went a long way to confirming his limitations. Irish raider Massin's Trap was the most experienced runner in the field and helps to provide a guide to the form as there's no reason to suppose that he ran below par while Long Lunch departed before the race had begun in earnest. It's to be hoped that neither he nor Prince Siegfried show any ill-effects from their falls with the latter described as a 'confidence' horse by his handler, that must be a slight concern. He was in the process of running a decent race here and this smart sort on the Flat has scope to progress further in this sphere.
