Analysis

This hasn't always been the strongest of Oaks trials, however that trend was bucked last year by winner Snow Fairy going on to Epsom success, plus three more Group One victories. The winner this year, BEATRICE AURORE, has something to live up to then, but she certainly made a good impression with the manner of her victory. Settled off the pace by Ted Durcan, she crept into the race, and actually had to delay her challenge as she found herself slightly boxed in as the race started to develop. A lesser horse may have struggled at that point, but angled out by Durcan, she made up her ground on the leader and soon put the race to bed. She didn't scoot away after putting a length between her and the runner-up, but her jockey was sympathetic and she surely could have won by further if desired. A trip to Epsom surely awaits, and there is every chance that the new quotes of around 16/20-1 will soon disappear if she is confirmed to be on target over the next 48 hours. Highest ran a very good race from the front, with John Gosden's Dynaformer filly outrunning her mark. She looks every inch a horse made for 12-14 furlongs but to her credit she didn't lie down when swamped for the lead a furlong out. She travels strongly so should pick up some black type over this trip, but her future lies over further. Third home was Imperial Pippin who had to be ridden from the stalls to hold a prominent early pitch but ran a very nice race, coming through to challenge at the furlong pole but just lacking the pace (and experience) of the first two home. Her form is working out well and she looks the type to improve over further, so a race like the Ribblesdale may be ideal. Poplin was mulish before the start, and she didn't seem to travel that well through the contest, finding herself shuffled to the back of the pack before the turn for home. She made eye-catching headway round the outside of runners before the two furlong pole but her effort was fairly short-lived and she was a beaten horse inside the last 100 yards. Her jockey wasn't hard on her, and she will have her day given a bit more time as she still looks a bit immature. Date With Destiny is bred in the purple but she got tired late on after helping to set some of the early fractions. She tried to rally a furlong out but was running on empty late on, and was just left to coast home in the end by Richard Hughes. A return to a mile and being dropped in may help her cause next time.
