Analysis

A winner for Mark Johnston, making it six wins in the race in the last 11 years. NAMIBIAN had to work hard for it though, as he was headed in the final furlong by Solar Sky. However he really stuck his neck out and battled back to lead, and, despite edging across the winner late on, managed to cling on for a neck success. He was the most patiently ridden of the Middleham trio but was only two lengths off the pace turning for home, as the field stacked up. Two furlongs from home he swept into the lead, in the process hampering stablemate Halifax. He crossed in front of Eternal Heart and Regent Street, moving onto the rail, before wandering off it in the final furlong. It was at this point that he intimidated the runner-up and he then moved into Henry Cecil's colt directly in front of the line. It was only really at this point that he sealed the race, and to be truthful it would have been no surprise had the stewards reversed the result. The runner-up ran very well, coming from off the gallop to really rattle home. He possibly pulled himself up slightly when hitting the front, showing signs of the quirks he displayed at Haydock, but this was a fine run and he's a very promising colt. Something like the St Leger may be on the radar later in the season. Third home, and beaten a country mile in the end, was Eternal Heart. He had the run of the race out in front, with Joe Fanning able to dictate a very steady tempo, however he couldn't quicken away from the field turning for home and as a result found himself swamped. Fourth was Regent Street, who seemed to get the trip ok but just lacked the class of the first pair; he could have done with a stronger gallop as well. Halifax followed him in, having held every chance with three furlongs to run, and he probably didn't get the trip as well as his stablemates. Hawaafez deserves a mention, with the filly staying on from off the gallop for a never nearer sixth. She has a two mile handicap in her at some point this season, with a more aggressive ride likely to see her in a better light. The rest were well beaten.
