Analysis

JOHNS SPIRIT provided Jonjo O'Neill with his second win in this race following Exotic Dancer's success in 2006 and, like Exotic Dancer, he was given a quiet ride, creeping his way through the field before being produced to challenge coming down the hill. In fact, connections felt that he was in front too soon following the fall of Easter Meteor and that that contributed to the six year old wandering around a little on the hill. He has now won both starts this season and one would suspect that he will come back here next month for the December Gold Cup, a race Exotic Dancer also won. The latter, co-incidentally, was also rated 139 and was able to defy a 10lb rise when following up and hopes would have to be high that Johns Spirit can also keep pace with the handicapper. Whether he can develop into a Grade One horse as his predecessor did is more debateable but he is clearly progressive and has time on his side with the ability to stay further which will help keep options open. There is a slight question as to whether he would have won had Colour Squadron not been hampered by Easter Meteor when moving through. The runner-up was a decent hurdler (albeit one who didn't progress as far as expected) and had been well supported for the handicap won by Rajdhani Express at the Festival. His jumping hindered his development as a novice but, although not perfect here, this was a vastly improved performance on that count and should enable him to continue to climb up the ranks. He should remain feasibly treated even after the handicapper has responded to this performance and will have to be taken seriously wherever he lines up next. Hidden Cyclone was in the front rank throughout and this probably rates a career best from a horse that has always been held in high regard by his trainer. This was his first run in cheekpieces which may have assisted but he will need to improve again in order to land a handicap as he's bound to go up for this run but he should continue to perform with credit in graded races in Ireland and connections must have the Ryanair in mind following this run. Attaglance shares some similarities with Colour Squadron in that he was also rated lower over fences than he was over hurdles after taking a while to get the hang of chasing. This was by far and away his best performance over the larger obstacles and the way that he stayed on after getting outpaced (and a moderate leap at the last) bodes well for the season ahead. He's still a novice (as is Colour Squadron) which will give connections plenty of options. Rajdhani Express ran another fine race but his performance suggests the handicapper may have his measure for now which is probably also true of Wishfull Thinking. Champion Court failed to live up to expectations and didn't keep on when headed as he has often done in the past, it's to be hoped that some hard races haven't left their mark and he could benefit from a confidence booster if connections can find a suitable opportunity. Ballynagour and Finian's Rainbow both travelled well up to a point but both weakened very quickly and have plenty to prove at present.
