Analysis

A rather strange finale to the day with a lot of young horses being told to sprint for home from as far as six furlongs from the finishing line. In the end that played into the hands of the winner CHELTENIAN who looks very much a three mile chaser in the making. He had hung left on his previous start, when winning at Kempton, but seemed much more at home going this way round. As some of his rivals cut each others throats up-front, Richard Johnson just had to encourage him to latch onto their coattails. By the time they turned for home he was almost on their heels and back on the bridle, and once he drew level with a couple of furlongs to run there was only ever going to be one winner. He stormed up the hill to win by five lengths, and whilst he received quotes for the 2012 Supreme Novices', it would be surprising if his future doesn't lie over 2m4f at least. Destroyer Deployed ran very well in second, especially as he was up with the pace for a long way. He's experienced, hardy and will certainly not be as big a price wherever he heads to next. Aupcharlie threatened to play a bigger hand when travelling strongly into contention down the hill, and whilst his effort flattened out in the closing stages, it was still a fine effort. The first three home were all aged five, but a six-year-old followed them in. Go All The Way was badly outpaced from a fairly early stage but he really caught the eye in the last half mile, staying on steadily to finish never nearer than at the line. This was his first run for a while, and this stoutly-bred horse was entitled to be a tad ring-rusty; like the winner he wasn't a cheap purchase for connections. Bar Cue Card 12 months ago, four-year-old's have not fared well, however Cinders And Ashes ran a cracker in fifth. He was getting weight from his elders but coped well with the step up in trip and looks sure to make up into a nice hurdler. Ericht raced fairly prominently but seemed to get a bit outpaced when the sprint started. He was plugging on again up the hill and connections won't be too disappointed, although he was certainly well-backed. Divine Rhapsody ran on ok late on but having been held up, he wasn't able to go with the leading bunch, and in truth he was never threatening. Cousin Khee travelled well, but was probably found out by his inexperience coming down the hill. Oscar Magic looks a stayer in the making and was far from disgraced in ninth, whilst The Tracey Shuffle raced keenly early on and paid the price late in the day. Dark Glacier is a three mile chaser in the making and was outpaced throughout; hurdles over a trip will see him bounce back to form.
