Analysis

One of the true greats of all time BIG BUCK'S landed an unprecedented fourth Ladbrokes World Hurdle in thrilling fashion as he fended off challenge after challenge as he rivals tried and failed to get past him. Five Dream and Cross Kennon led the field along for the first circuit where there was little change in the racing order as Ruby Walsh settled the 5-6 favourite on the inner behind the front rank. It was on the approach to the third last where the race started to unfold quite quickly as Walsh sent Big Buck's to the head of affairs and eventual runner-up Voler La Vedette started to cut through the field having been held up in last. Oscar Whisky, Mourad, Thousand Stars and Smad Place also all had the move of the market leader covered sweeping down the hill and it would now be a case of whether the pursuers could not only get to but get past the leader. Mourad was the first under pressure and waved the white flag two out and that left Oscar Whisky and Thousand Stars in the leader's slipstream with Voler La Vedette cetainly making the most eyecatching progress still on the bridle. The tank began to flicker towards empty for the first two mentioned as Big Buck's kicked for glory off the home turn with Andrew Lynch still motionless on Voler La Vedette. Lynch's tactic to switch under the stands' rail in an attempt to avoid a side-by-side battle up the hill was a last roll of the dice but she could never reel in what is undoubtedly the horse of a lifetime for his owner Andy Stewart. She lost absolutely nothing in defeat but it doesn't seem to matter what attempts are used to sink Big Buck's, he is simply invincible at the moment. Smad Place comfortably outstayed Oscar Whisky and Thousand Stars and connections are right to think they have a high-class staying novice chaser for next season. Oscar Whisky will probably go back to half-a-mile shorter and the race at Aintree next month is right up his street again where he could meet Thousand Stars once more. The Willie Mullins-trained pair Mikael D'Haguenet started to go backwards three out and So Young lasted another flight before crying enough. Dynaste has had three cracks at Big Buck's this season but his goose was cooked on the run down to the second last.
