Analysis
A really hotly contested handicap, which was perhaps emphasised by the fact that it was delayed twice as about 15 horses tried to gain a front-rank position at the fall of the tapes. Ultimately it went the way of DIVERS who was held up last in the early stages. In a rough race, Graham Lee was brave enough to keep to the inside throughout, but the grey made up his ground in eye-catching fashion before the downhill run. As the race was whittled down to half a dozen prospective winners, he still had several lengths to find, but, after being clever at the second-last, he then put in a stunning leap at the last to draw alongside Vino Griego and Quantitativeeasing. He then proceeded to bound up the hill, and whilst Quantitativeeasing chased him hard, he never looked like surrendering his hard-fought lead. The runner-up ran a blinder, as he was never too far off the pace. Most of his jumps, the last especially, were exuberant, however he did make a bit of a mess of the fence after the water (which Swing Bill hit as well) which may have halted his momentum a fraction. Third home was Tullamore Dew. Having attracted plenty of support in the ring, he was never too far off the pace, however he was caught in a bit of a pocket coming down the hill and there's no doubt that he lost some ground as a result. He ran on really well after the last, but the race had gone beyond his grasp by then. Fourth home was Vino Griego, who is a smashing type of horse. A lovely looking beast, he was very keen in the early stages but then helped dispute a (strong) pace for a long way. He emptied when headed at the last, and probably paid the price for over-racing early on. Definity was a very short price for such a competitive handicap after the earlier wins of his jockey Ruby Walsh, and whilst he tried to creep into the race from a midfield position, fifth place really only ever looked the best he would get. He didn't seem to see out his race with much zest and one wonders whether he might have a small respiratory problem. Tharawaat followed him home having threatened to make more of a race of it; he jumped well and is perhaps just a little high in the weights, although perhaps more patient tactics might have aided his cause. Swing Bill could never lead which went against him, whilst Shakalakaboomboom stayed on down the hill to try and latch onto the leaders but his effort petered out. More interesting for the future might be On Borrowed Wings who made up a lot of ground late on from a long way off the pace; he perhaps isn't a total natural over fences at this stage of his career however. Nadiya De La Vega was well-held, but she went off too quick and should be of more interest when her sights are lowered over two miles.
