A gutsy display of staying here from Alan King's WEST END ROCKER. Midfield for much of the race, he moved sweetly into contention from around half-way and struck the front before the final turn for home. Although not always fluent over his fences in the past, the easy-to-back gelding put in some solid leaps when he needed to late on and held on from a rallying Minella Boys for a deserved success. One gets the impression that he doesn't do too much once hitting the front and he was just idling slightly, waiting for another horse to challenge him. On this evidence he can be considered a live outsider for Aintree in April, although one would liked to have seen him jump those big fences before. The runner-up ran very well, especially as he wasn't fluent at a couple of his fences before the contest really started to hot up. Although he sports the cheekpieces, he looks genuine and the Sussex National winner seemed to show no ill effects of a hard race just two weeks previous. Incentivise came from a fair way off the pace and was still plugging on when making a hash of the last. He might not have bettered his eventual third but it certainly didn't help. Le Beau Bai was given a fair bit to do by jockey Jake Greenall and although he plugged on off the final bend he never looked like picking the leaders up from off the pace. Richard's Sundance was prominent for a fair way but found things a bit hot from around four fences from home, whilst Noun De La Thinte ran a solid race back in fifth. She was under pressure a long way home and although she was found wanting late on, there aren't many gamer mares around. Former Grand National winner Comply Or Die seemed to enjoy himself, making a lot of the running and David Pipe's charge did his Aintree chance no harm at all, although he weakened out of things late on into sixth spot. Hello Bud helped cut out some of the early pace, which was steady enough, and was another who remains of interest over the National fences in the future despite pulling up here; he probably found the going a tad too soft.
