Analysis

Something of a bunched finish to the maiden won 12 months ago by Masked Marvel with around three lengths covering the first eight home but the pace was relatively sedate and one or two of these had already shown a fair level of ability and it's not to say that the race won't work out. The honours went to OPEN WATER who is reportedly held in quite high regard at Kingsclere but was expected to need the outing. Settled in midfield on the rails, he moved a little wider at the top of the home straight in order to secure a run but the first gap closed on him when Greek War drifted across his bows and then Pilgrims Rest also edged in. There was open space in front of him, however, and he picked up well in the final furlong under fairly strong hands and heels riding to win well. The trainer reported that future plans had yet to be discussed and this first foal of a dual winner in Italy has no big race entries but this was a highly encouraging start to his career. The placed horses both had the benefit of two runs under their belts already and Greek War just edged out the front-running Alshmemi. The second returned a beaten favourite on debut before showing mild improvement behind the highly regarded Harvard N Yale at Newmarket. He stuck to his task and could be seen to better effect over a longer trip on softer ground next year. Alshmemi has improved with each start and should be able to open his account in an average contest, perhaps back over seven furlongs. Rosslyn Castle was described by his trainer as being physically and mentally weak but the colt - who is out of an Irish Oaks winner - finished off his race to really good effect and was a big eyecatcher; however, given his trainer's comments, he may need more time to build on this initial effort. Free House was always prominent and saw out his race well, this was a step forwards from his Newmarket debut and he can improve again. Dynastic, Galleon and Pilgrims Rest all showed ability with none given an unduly hard time by their riders on debut and all three can be expected to improve for the outing. They were clear of Man Of Plenty who was fairly clueless for much of the race but a number of the yard's youngsters have taken a marked step forwards from their first to their second starts this season.
