Analysis

The place to be was under the stands' rail again with FREDERICK ENGELS ending the day on a high for punters as he justified favouritism at 9/4. He had thrashed a useful field at Musselburgh on his previous start and continued his progress with a convincing victory under Johnny Murtagh. The winner was hard at work two furlongs out but he responded really gamely to get on top in the closing stages - he has given the Haydock form of Queen Mary favourite Shumoos a huge boost on two occasions now and she is sure to be a hot favourite for that race on Wednesday. Runner-up Stonefield Flyer showed good early speed from a middle draw and kept on really well to give rookie trainer trainer Keith Dalgleish a big day while Caspar Netscher had looked unfortunate in the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom last time after a hefty early bump from the stalls. He seemed to appreciate the return to five furlongs and stuck to his guns in the closing stages. Gentlemans Code ran a tremendous race in the circumstances. Not well drawn in stall 10, he showed blistering early toe and then tracked across to take overall command towards the stands' rail. Perhaps those exertions took a toll in the end, but he ran an excellent race nonetheless to finish clear of the remainder in fourth. Bear Behind was even more inconvenienced in stall five and was one of the group on the far side to eventually track across and join the main pack. He ran on nicely without troubling the principals and can add to his tally for Tom Dascombe. Es Que Love showed good speed and only began to tie up inside the distance while once-raced maiden Springinmystep ran on in quite taking fashion late in the day and looks well up to breaking his duck in a maiden up north. Whether they were poorly drawn or not up to this, there were a lot of runners treading water as the remainder finished well strung out for a sprint event.
