Analysis

Aidan O'Brien boosted his fine record in the race as POWER got the better of a protracted battle with Roman Soldier inside the final furlong. The pair got quite close and there was a hefty bump at one stage but after Ryan Moore edged his mount to the front, the result was allowed to stand. Both were a little way clear of the remainder and the look likely types for the Dewhurst Stakes further down the line. The early stages of the race saw the field split into two and it was clear the place to be was towards the stands' rail. Third place St Barths was right at the rear of the nearside group and made good late progress to hit the frame but the biggest eyecatcher was Mick Channon's Gatepost. He found himself at the rear of the smaller far side group and Jamie Spencer decided he had no chance from there. He angled across to the rear of the stands' side group in dramatic fashion and then ran on in tremendous fashion to finish fifth. Anything like a reasonable passage in the race would have seen him get involved with the front two and perhaps even come out on top. Mezmaar came into the race with a big reputation for Barry Hills but raced quite freely in a prominent position among those on the far side. He tracked towards the centre of the course but was eased by Richard Hills once his chance had gone and there could be better days for him ahead. Maiden Red Aggressor showed great speed and still just about had the lead with two furlongs to run despite being in the wrong group. He was swallowed up by the stouter stayers inside the distance but should be an absolute shoo-in for a maiden somewhere, perhaps back over five furlongs.
