Analysis

He won't be the first horse to bounce back to form at the Festival, but SON OF FLICKA did so in some style and it would appear that half of Cheshire was on, as he was backed down from as big as 66/1 in the morning to an s.p. of 16/1. After a lacklustre season he was 5lb lower than when second at last-year's meeting and got a helpful ride from Jason Maguire, never too far off the pace (which wasn't lightning fast). Although outpaced at the top of the hill, he ran on well and kicked for home turning in. That move nicked a length on his rivals and although runner-up Get Me Out Of Here tried hard, he never really looked like picking up the winner late on. This was very much job done for Son Of Flicka (and part of a long-term plan one would imagine) so any hefty rise in the weights for this victory could see him struggling in the near future. Get Me Out Of Here hasn't had the best of luck at the Festival but really tried his heart out here, having been pushed along coming down the hill. He responded well to Tony McCoy and jumped the final flight well, but just couldn't catch yet another well-handicapped horse ahead of him. Third was Veiled who looked as if she might play an even bigger part when travelling into the race on the outside coming down the hill, whilst fourth-home Silverhand was doing all of his best work at the end of the race and would probably have preferred a stronger pace in the middle of the race. Cockney Trucker seems to run the same race regardless of the pace and was another flying at the finish, something which he has done round here before. Balgarry was the story of the race before the flag fall, being backed off the boards, but having dictated the early pace he started to feel the pinch turning in. Up until then he had travelled supremely well (last off the bridle) so it was disappointing that his effort petered out so quickly. Mind you he'll be interesting returned to two miles next time. Third Intention held every chance turning in but felt the pinch at that point, whilst Final Approach could never get into the race having been held up last early on; he's got something to prove now. Spirit River deserves a good mention, as he was running a big race when falling at the last. He wasn't going to win but looked set for a place and this was his best run for a long time, having travelled with plenty of purpose.
