Analysis

Nicky Henderson had made no secret of the esteem in which he held SIMONSIG and he demolished his rivals in the style of an extremely good horse. He casually lobbed along in mid-division until moving up on to the heels of Fiulin and Cotton Mill at the top of the hill. As the former started to back pedal, he and Cotton Mill were clear of their rivals two out before the winner was then left in splendid isolation as the latter jinked at the flight and unseated Denis O'Regan. The grey was untroubled from that point and the immediate reaction from connections was that this is as far as he would need to go as he possesses so much pace. Jockey Barry Geraghty admitted he is still very raw and already can't wait to see him tackle fences. Cotton Mill was in the process of running a smashing race and still had not been asked for maximum effort when he crashed out. It might be stretching things to suggest he would have won but should have been a clear second. To add insult to injury, he then took a nasty fall at the last hurdle when loose so lets hope he has not done any lasting damage. The remainder trailed in at a respectable distance, headed by Felix Yonger, who benefited from a patient ride under Paul Townend and was able to pick his way through tiring runners after two out. Third-place Monksland made progress down the hill on the inner but could never land a blow as the winner had flown. He shot past Make Your Mark off the home turn as the latter floundered in the closing stages. Close House was beaten a long way in fourth but kept on quite pleasingly for the future while Sous Les Cieux never get on any nearer than his final finishing position. Nagpur was another to stay on after racing in rear in the early stages but was never at the races while Secret Edge did try and mix it with the front rank for a circuit but was being shoved along at the top of the hill and faded tamely. Nelson's Bridge was trying to get into contention but made a mess of the third last and his hopes quickly evaporated.
