Analysis

High drama for the two-mile championship. Kauto Stone got no further than the first, where he buried Ruby Walsh, but worse was to follow at the fourth as Wishfull Thinking departed in spectacular fashion. He completely misjudged the fence under Richard Johnson and cartwheeled into the throng of spectators stationed around the obstacle. That left Sizing Europe in front with a circuit to run, FINIAN'S RAINBOW as his closest pursuer and Big Zeb back in third. Those positions did not change as the trio raced in single file until the second last, where the eventual winner moved up to shadow Sizing Europe more closely after the latter put in a slowish leap. Henry De Bromhead's inmate still led by a length as they faced up for home and what turned out to be the final fence - the drama then unfolded further as the pair came very close together as they tried to negotiate the final obstacle which had now been omitted following the earlier Wishfull Thinking incident. Sizing Europe initially looked to get the worst of the shenanigans but then had a better position on the track as the duo threaded their way between the hurdle and chase courses. However, Finian's Rainbow dug deep in the final 200 yards and gradually pulled clear close home. Both horses deserve tremendous credit in an awkward situation but will ominously have new kid on the block Sprinter Sacre to cope with in this next season. They were 15 lengths clear of Big Zeb - the latter could not lay up with the front two at any stage and his advancing years are just starting to catch up with this gutsy warrior. The remainder were further adrift - Gauvain was struggling from the top of the hill while both Realt Dubh and I'm So Lucky looked on from afar and never got out of rear division.
