Analysis

A rousing finish to the finale with eight runners in contention at the final flight with the majority of the challengers bunching up under the stands' side rail with Rajamand (a final flight faller) and Ballybriggan notably short of room. Only about five of the nineteen strong field were out of contention as the field freewheeled down the hill for the final time with Crystal Rock travelling noticeably well on the outside and DEVIL TO PAY on the inside. Having jumped the last, it was Devil To Pay who proved just the stronger under Charlie Huxley to prevail in a driving finish; this was the gelding's first run of the campaign and first of the season so he's entitled to come on again. Crystal Rock is relatively exposed but this half-brother to the talented Jack The Giant has progressed steadily this season and may still be improving. There were numerous hard luck stories with the field bunching up but, aside from the placed horses Bold Addition and Ballybriggan, there were positive performances from Wild Desert, Khayar and Caught By Witness in behind and all three did enough to suggest that they could pick up an average race before the season's out.
