Analysis

A fiercely competitive heat as ever and Fruity O'Rooney almost made all the running only to be collared in the final 100 yards by ALFIE SHERRIN. The runner-up had been unlucky last time at Doncaster when Jamie Moore's saddle slipped in the closing stages and he almost made amends under an attacking ride. He had the field on the stretch rolling down the hill for the second time and it was just a question of whether he would keep going from the second last. He very almost did only to see the winner tackle him halfway up the run-in and outstay him in the closing stages. The winner had been ridden in reverse having been put to sleep in the early stages of the contest. He still had a dozen lengths to make up on the winner coming down the hill but really started to find his stride and cut through the pack. The first-time cheekpieces had the desired effect after a patchy season to date. Our Mick was a gallant third as he kept on in tremendous fashion having been prominent for much of the trip. He is a progressive novice and there should be more to come once he finds some consistency with his fencing. The Package had been touched off in this race two years ago and has been very lightly raced since. The vibes had been positive ahead of this comeback and he only gave best on the run-in after creeping into the race under a patient Timmy Murphy. He has lots of ability so lets hope we get to see more of him. Billie Magern put in a solid shift but the novice duo Hold On Julio and Baille Anrai found this jumping test a bit too much at this stage of their careers and were feeling the pinch at the top of the hill. Both had won races on soft ground this season and will be interesting next winter once again when they have their conditions. Tullamore Dew made a string of mistakes while Mossley almost unshipped Barry Geraghty four out with a bad blunder. Quantativeeasing was rousted along from the top of the hill and never really looked in a position to get competitive. Magnanimity seemed to be moving up to challenge as the field came down the hill but he soon backed out of things and is better on easier ground.
