Analysis

Not the most impressive performance from leading Irish Independent Arkle Trophy fancy FINIAN'S RAINBOW, despite the official winning distance of 11 lengths. He was keen early on and made a slight mistake at the second fence, before a more serious one at the third. He winged the next but then fiddled the next and it's that pattern which won't instil confidence into those who already hold vouchers for the Arkle. Although likely to outclass his rivals, he was basically handed the race by a serious mistake from Kilmurry five out. Although Kilmurry battled back, and wasn't losing much ground on the favourite turning for home, he sadly broke down between the final two fences and was pulled up by jockey Joe Tizzard. This was a real shame as he had jumped well prior to his mistake and looked like giving the favourite a serious scare. Another sad footnote to an awful day was the news that Kilmurry was put down after the race. Stagecoach Pearl set out to make every yard and got an easy lead. But he was soon brushed aside before five out and was made to look pretty pedestrian down that far side. In the end he only just held on for second from Tail Of The Bank who never looked a threat at any stage.
