Analysis

This had looked very competitive on paper but was turned into a procession by the progressive SAPHIR DU RHEU with the 'right' horses filling the places. The winner had been raised by 15lbs for winning a Sandown handicap on his preceding start and, although that was reduced by his rider's claim, he made light of the rise in the manner of a very smart performer. A tilt at the World Hurdle (for which his stable is amassing an enviable squad) has been mooted and handicaps could well be out of the equation once the handicapper has had his say. He would have to prove his stamina for that trip as well as tackling a different class of rival while his ability to act on a faster surface has to be taken on trust at present with his most disappointing performance coming on the fastest surface that he's encountered when finishing down the field in the Fred Winter. A step up in grade is inevitable but connections are already looking forward to sending him chasing and it wouldn't be entirely surprising if they were to look after him this season with next term in mind. The future is also bright for If In Doubt who showed a likeable attitude to battle on for second despite still finding this step up in class all a bit much as his jumping came under pressure. He had looked green when winning at Towcester on his previous start and there could be a deal more to come, perhaps over further, although he may need a little time to recover from his exertions as he appeared to have quite a hard race. Like Minded had finished a well beaten ninth in the 2011 renewal but runs this C&D well and has returned to his best this season for his new stable; this was a solid effort but the handicapper appears to have him about right and he could find life hard if raised for this run. Spirit Of Shankly ran a strange race, losing his place before plugging on through beaten horses and his finishing position may have flattered him a little. Held in high regard as a novice, he hadn't fulfilled expectations but comfortably accounted for a smart prospect when fitted with a tongue-tie on his preceding start and he's worth another chance to confirm that impression as he may have found this ground too testing. Kaylif Aramis had shaped as though he would relish this test when sixth in the Ladbroke on his preceding start but didn't get home as well as had been expected; he may have benefited from a slightly more patient ride and is worth another chance although the evidence is beginning to mount up against him. Junction Fourteen had been raised a similar amount to the winner for a facile C&D success, albeit against a much weaker field. He failed to back that run up but he travelled into the race strongly before getting tired in the straight and is well worth another chance. River Maigue failed to justify decent market support. He had looked to be crying out for this trip on his reappearance so this run was slightly puzzling and leaves him with something to prove.
