Analysis

A fairytale story for owner Trevor Hemmings, trainer Donald McCain and rider Jason Maguire as BALLABRIGGS won the 2011 John Smith's Grand National. And boy did the horse enjoy it. Although he finished totally dehydrated, the way that he rallied after the last, and then round the elbow, was a joy to see. A real trier, he seemed to relish jumping these fences, and was always in a prominent position. He only really made one mistake, at Valentine's, but was soon back in the front rank, and he was the horse who pushed on as others were crying enough. Nothing in behind him was still on the bridle at the back of the far side for the final time. A quintet of runners moved on, with Oscar Time, Niche Market, Big Fella Thanks and Don't Push It trying to latch onto the leader. However only Oscar Time emerged as a real danger, and he was certainly close enough to pick up the winner. However he made a fairly serious mistake two from home which stopped his momentum, and although he jumped the last well, it certainly played its part. Sam Waley-Cohen tried to slipstream the winner round the elbow but once he really asked his horse to try and go past it was clear that he was on a very tired horse and his finishing effort was a wobbling, weary one. Don't Push It ran a cracker in third. He was held up in the early stages and given plenty of time by AP McCoy to warm to his task; he certainly did, and for one brief second turning in, it looked like he might stay on best of all. However his challenge petered out, and he was fairly well-held in the end. There were some very tired horses on the run-in, not least Big Fella Thanks who eventually weakened into seventh. He made a serious error around halfway, but he worked his way into the race on the inside under Graham Lee. He once again travelled well, but the stamina fears that abounded for him prior to the race seemed to be underlined once again. State Of Play came from a mile back under Paul Moloney. Having jumped off in the front rank, he drifted back through the field. However he found a second wind late on, and stayed on well past beaten horses; this was some training performance. Fifth home was Niche Market who tried to push the pace on a bit past halfway. He ran a cracker and was another to fare extremely well from such a prominent position. The Midnight Club made a bad mistake at the third, and was then hampered by a faller on the final circuit, but stayed on for sixth; the early setback made his cause a very hard one. Surface To Air came after Big Fella Thanks and belied his large odds, whilst Skippers Brig came next having been unable to advance a midfield position throughout. Backstage was given a patient ride but seemed to jump ponderously at a key time when the leaders got away, whilst Silver By Nature didn't seem to relish the fences or the quick pace that they went on unsuitably fast ground. Honourable mentions go to Santa's Son who wasn't great at the 19th but jumped well in the main before pulling up before the 27th (as did What A Friend), whilst Killyglen was in the process of running a big race when taking a heavy fall at the 27th, having made an error at the 26th. Majestic Concorde seemd to enjoy the day; although he ad dropped back from his prominent early position, he was still in with a chance when he got rid of his jockey at the Canal Turn. Arbor Supreme unseated his rider at the 28th. That's Rhythm went at the first, the only faller, whilst Vic Venturi and Becauseicouldntsee were other early casualties who went at the second.
