Mad Moose once again made his bid for a share of the glory by refusing to jump the first fence, but once the race settled down, it turned out to be a real thriller - despite the much-publicised absence of Sprinter Sacre. Kauto Stone was sent to the front from the start and ensured the contest was run at a proper pace, Captain Conan settling in second with SIRE DE GRUGY and Somersby in midpack. Kauto Stone was still five lengths clear when landing flatfooted over the water jump and by the time they reached the last of the three railway fences, Captain Conan and Oiseau De Nuit were breathing down his neck. Captain Conan made his bid for glory jumping the Pond Fence, but no sooner had he mastered the leader, Sire De Grugy loomed up on his inside. At that point, Jamie Moore was forced to switch Sire De Grugy around the fading Kauto Stone and Captain Conan was two lengths clear over the second-last fence. But Moore didn't panic and produced his mount down the outside to lead before the last and stretch away for an emphatic success, with the ever-admirable Somersby staying on to grab second spot. Where would an on-song Sprinter Sacre have finished? Probably a good few lengths in front - or at least that was the view of the winning trainer. But this was nevertheless a proper Grade One performance in a fair renewal of this famous race - fourth-placed Oiseau De Nuit is no mug on his day and the rest were beaten some way. The winner arguably benefited from being ridden more conservatively than when beaten by Kid Cassidy at Cheltenham previously, but jumped better too. Somersby didn't have the speed to get involved when the front two quickened clear three out, but gives the form decent ballast. Captain Conan jumped well in the main and certainly wasn't disgraced on his seasonal return, although his performance might not have helped Nicky Henderson solve the conundrum as to his optimum trip.
