Analysis

A win for William Haggas, but perhaps not the one that many anticipated, as SHAMALI took top honours. Not seen since finishing well-held in a Ffos Las handicap back in May, the Selkirk gelding was pushed forward into a front-rank position alongside Resentful Angel. Ultimately this pair would fill the first two places so it's not unreasonable to suggest that a steady tempo meant that they were in the best place to strike. Whilst (the shorter priced pair of) Pink Symphony and Penitent were pushed along turning for home, the two up front still travelled with purpose and they had the race between them in the final 200 yards. Ultimately Shamali swept by for a convincing success, and he looks a potential improver this season, although future engagements may not always work out as favourably. Resentful Angel went into the race rated 87 and that bare fact would lead one to question the form slightly. Third home was Pink Symphony. She tried to come with a renewed challenge at the furlong marker, having been pulled out by her jockey to challenge, however her effort was soon made to look a tad one-paced. Although they didn't go a strong pace, she actually looked to be struggling to go the early gallop. Her jockey was lower in the saddle even before the turn for home and she just looked to be a little too hurried throughout. This was her first run on the surface which may have had something to do with it, although perhaps a lack of match fitness may also have played its part. Favourite Penitent was a major disappointment. Jockey Frankie Dettori had him in a fairly close-up fourth throughout, but the warning signs were there on the turn for home and he was well-held in the end. He was conceding weight all-round but he has the class to shrug that aside. Ultimately his three runs at further than a mile have been disappointing and one would assume that he will not contest races over this distance again. Fifth home was Cumulus Nimbus who could never land a blow having been held up; he will be better coming off a stronger gallop. Bikini Babe is a strong stayer so this middling pace would never have played to her strengths and she trailed in last of all.
