John Gosden's Gregorian was a comfortable winner of the bet365 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.
William Buick was completing a treble on the day after earlier successes on Zephuros and Calypso Beat, and he was a length winner over the strongly-ridden Garswood (Ryan Moore) in second.
There were some serious disappointments in behind, notably the well-backed favourite Gabrial's Lad who was never going the pace on the rain-softened ground.
The downpour should've benefitted Top Notch Tonto, but he too was well adrift at the finish - as was Penitent.
The first-time blinkers lit up Garswood who was always in front rank, but he didn't quite have the pace of Gregorian who travelled well on the stands' rail for Buick.
The winner was pushed out in the closing stages for a length verdict over Garswood, who was in turn two-and-a-half lengths clear of Eton Forever at the line.
Buick told Racing UK: "We've always thought a lot of him. He was disappointing in the Diadem at Epsom, we thought he'd go very close that day, but maybe the ground was too lively. Maybe as he's getting older he's getting quicker too and seven furlong is his optimum trip now."
